Supporting Refugees Through Sports: : A Personal Initiative

As someone deeply committed to fostering social integration and empowering marginalized communities, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with Cruz Roja (Red Cross) in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on a deeply personal project. This initiative focuses on organizing sports activities for young men living in the refugee center. What started as a volunteer effort has grown into a meaningful experience, one that has profoundly shaped my perspective on the power of community, connection, and resilience.

Why Sports? More Than Just Physical Activity

At first glance, these sessions may seem like simple exercise routines. But they are so much more than that. For refugees who have experienced trauma, loss, and displacement, sports offer:

A Safe Space: A structured and supportive environment where participants can feel a sense of normalcy and safety.
Emotional Resilience: Physical activity has a direct impact on mental health, helping to reduce stress, anxiety, and feelings of isolation.
Community Building: Through teamwork and shared goals, participants form bonds that foster trust, friendship, and mutual support.

The refugee experience is often one of isolation and uncertainty. These sessions aim to replace those feelings with connection and belonging. Each game played or goal scored is a step toward rebuilding confidence and a sense of self-worth.

Cruz Roja: A Pillar of Support

Cruz Roja’s mission goes beyond providing basic necessities. Their work addresses the complex challenges of social exclusion, poverty, and cultural integration. Collaborating with them has given me a front-row seat to their unwavering commitment to humanitarian action.

In this partnership, I’ve seen firsthand how programs like ours complement Cruz Roja’s broader efforts. While they provide critical support—such as housing, legal aid, and healthcare—initiatives like sports help bridge cultural divides, offering a holistic approach to integration.

Building Bridges Across Cultures

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project is witnessing how sports become a universal language. Participants not only improve their physical well-being but also:

  • Learn About European Culture: Engaging in local customs, traditions, and social norms.
  • Practice Language Skills: Interacting with volunteers and peers helps them develop conversational skills in Spanish and other European languages.
  • Foster Cultural Exchange: Sharing their own stories, traditions, and values, creating a two-way learning experience.

These interactions remind me that integration isn’t just about policies or systems—it’s about people. Real integration happens when individuals connect on a human level, breaking down stereotypes and building mutual respect.

A Personal Journey of Growth

Volunteering with Cruz Roja has been as much a learning experience for me as it has been for the participants. It has deepened my understanding of the refugee experience and reinforced my belief in the importance of community-driven initiatives.

Every session is a reminder that we all have a role to play in creating a more inclusive society. Whether through mentoring, volunteering, or simply offering a helping hand, we can make a difference in the lives of those navigating the difficult path of resettlement.

I am proud to contribute to the incredible work of Cruz Roja and look forward to continuing this journey of empowerment and integration. Together, we can create a community where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.
